In Tibetan Buddhism it is thought that reciting the Chenrezig mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, either out loud or mentally to oneself, invokes Chenrezig's powerful and benevolent attention, the expression of the Buddha's compassion. Seeing the written mantra is said to have the same effect, so it can be found in places where it is well visible, even carved in stone.
