In Tibetan Buddhism it is thought that reciting the Chenrezig mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, either out loud or mentally to oneself, invokes Chenrezig's powerful and benevolent attention, the expression of the Buddha's compassion. Seeing the written mantra is said to have the same effect, so it can be found in places where it is well visible, even carved in stone.
The same thing happens by turning the written form of the mantra on a prayer wheel, so there are many of these cylinders with “om mani padme hum” written many times inside, even millions. There are small wheels that you can carry and turn with one hand, and others so big that they need the impulse of several people.
According to the masters of Tibetan Buddhism, the entire body of the Buddha's teachings is contained in the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra.
